Build a Network
 

Odds are that you know of someone who may be able to help you with your career search. If you do not have a network in place, you should start building one today. When an employer looks at your CV/Resume they are looking for more than what you know, they are also looking for who you know and how that can benefit their organization.

Keep in touch. You will have a better network if regularly keeping in touch with people, acquaintances, colleagues, and friends. When you need to ask for help, it is much easier to get assistance from someone that remembers you then someone that you rarely communicate with.

Make it mutually beneficial. The last thing that someone wants is to keep providing information to another without benefit. Make it mutually rewarding by offering assistance to those that are going out of their way to help you.

Be Prepared. Have your business cards and contact information readily available at all times. You never know when you will run into someone that may help you, your network and your career search.

Save the Information. Store the information in a journal, in a computer or in a black book. You want to have it accessible to you at all times so that when the timing is right, you can take advantage of who you know.
