Consistent Approach

Employers are now getting applicants from all over the world and it is very difficult for them to manage the entire process. Often times the employer will receive many applicants for a single position and this complicates matters worse. You will have a better response from employers with consistent themes, messages and formatting.

Be consistent with your message. Every cover letter, CV/Resume, Thank you letter and reference should be consistently sending the same message. The message that you are trying to convey is that you are a highly trained professional that is qualified for the position. You are not sending that message to an employer if your CV/Resume is poorly written, your cover letter is generic, and you do not follow up with a thank you letter.

Tailor your documents. All of your documents (your CV/Resume, Thank you letters, etc.) should be tailored to the position that you are interested in. This means that if your current title is a "Team Leader" but for the position that you are applying for it is called "Department Manager", then you should provide information to the employer that the titles are interchangeable.

Consistent Formatting. This sounds simple enough, but it is imperative that your documents maintain the same formatting throughout. For example, if you have 1" margins on your CV/Resume, then you should apply the same formatting techniques to your Cover Letters, References, and Thank you letters. Additionally, you should be using the same paper, font, and envelopes for all of your correspondence.
