Interview Preparation

Preparation is required before you interview on the phone or onsite with a employer. Preparation will make you more comfortable, relaxed, and ready. Preparing in advance will also present a more polished image to the employer and ultimately put you ahead of the competition.

Research. Before you interview, research the company, the position, the interviewer (if possible), and the community. Visit the company's website, it is full of valuable information that will provide you more insight into the dynamics of the organization. You should also research the position thoroughly to prepare questions that you need to know. If the interviewer is a prominent person in the company, find out more and see how you can relate to them. Finally, research the community to become aware of what it has to offer.

Questions. Once you performed your research, generate a list of questions that will be used to ask the employer about their company and the position. You should prioritize which questions are most important to you. Additionally, the questions should be categorized for easy reference (questions that you would ask a HR Consultant would vary differently then when speaking to a Vice President).

Supplies. Buy a nice leather portfolio (you will use this for the onsite interview) to store your questions, Cover Letter, and CV/Resume. Within the portfolio, have at least 10 copies of your Cover Letter and CV/Resume handy. You should also have an extra pen that has been tested before use and immediately available at all times.
