Onsite Interview Tips

The onsite interview is the deal maker or the deal breaker and is the most crucial aspect of the entire process. Onsite interviews can take as little as an hour or can last several days. Preparing for an onsite interview takes some effort so it is important that you are able to dedicate the time required.

Research. As mentioned before, you must thoroughly research the interviewer (if possible), position, company, and community. Write down your questions and prioritize them accordingly.

Prepare. Practice interviewing with a friend, colleague, or associate if possible. Tape yourself (CD, Cassette, etc.) before interviewing to eliminate the "um's and oh's". Ensure that your other obligations (friends, family, children, pets, etc.) are being taken care of in case your interview runs late. Buy or borrow a nice leather portfolio and store your questions, cover letter, and at least 10 copies of your CV/Resume.

Be Punctual. It is never appropriate to be late for an interview. Before you visit the location, make sure that you can be there on time (drive to it in advance and locate the room that you will be interviewing beforehand). You should be no more than 5-10 minutes early for the interview.

Be Professional. Make sure that your clothing is clean, pressed, and presentable.  Try to develop a rapport and relate with the interviewer. Always maintain eye contact and positive body language. Do not interrupt the interviewer and listen to them very closely. Always address whomever is interviewing you as Dr./Mr./Mrs. unless they tell you otherwise.
