Phone Interview Tips

Phone interviews are a part of the screening process for employers and are critical to the success of you landing thejob. A phone interview will give them enough information to decide whether it is worthwhile to bring you in for an onsite interview. It is very important to ensure that your are able to speak to the employer in a quiet place and be prepared for the interview in advance.

Schedule. Most of the time, an interview is scheduled days or weeks in advance.  You most likely will be communicating with the employer via email or a Recruiter to schedule the phone interview. Ensure that you are maintaining a high level of professionalism with your communications before the interview takes place by appropriately addressing the interviewer as Dr./Mr./Mrs. unless told otherwise.

Location. The location is one of the most important things to consider when setting up a phone interview. You need a quiet place that will not permit any distractions. Make sure that loud dogs, children or other distractions are not present.

Supplies. Have a pad and paper ready at your desk. Turn off your cell phone (unless you are using it to interview), pagers, music, television and other electronic devices. Have a bottle or glass of water nearby in case your throat gets dry.

Listen. You must listen to what the interviewer is asking and answer with professional responses. Do not interrupt the interviewer and be polite at all times. Write down any questions that you may have and ask the questions if needed.
