Planning ahead will make for a much smoother transition from your current home to the new one. Planning encompasses many things including selling your home, buying another, reserving moving services and more. The more that you are able to do before the big day, the better off that you will be.
Sell your home. Ideally, you should have your home sold before you move. Depending upon the market, you should start selling your home 6 months before the move date.
Find a new home. Before you move, you must find a new home. Search online and use a Realtor to help you find the perfect home in the new community.
Moving Service. If you are using a moving service, you should start getting bids 10 weeks in advance.
Travel Arrangements. You should make all of your travel arrangements (airfare, truck rental, etc.) about 8 weeks in advance.
Schools. If you have children, you should let the school district know 6 weeks in advance that you are moving. You should get all of the school documents (including immunizations and report cards) that are needed for the new school in which they will be attending. Contact the new school at least 6 weeks before the move to ensure that you have all of the necessary documents.
Bills. A few weeks before you move, notify the banks, prescriptions, subscriptions, insurance providers and health providers that you are moving and advise them of your new address.
Post office. Contact the post office and fill out a change of address form. This should be done a few weeks before you move.
