Salary Negotiation Tips

Negotiating can be stressful, difficult, and frustrating. Before you begin negotiating, it is important that you research what others in your specialty are making, consider what you need to make to maintain and/or exceed your current lifestyle and evaluate what type of impact that the position will have towards your career.

Research. You can speak with a Professional Recruiter to have a good understanding of what others in your specialty are making. Alternatively, you can use a service such as www.payscale.com which will provide an overview of what the industry standard is.

Cost of living. If you are relocating, you must also factor in the cost of living for the new location in comparison to where you currently reside. A city that has a much lower cost of living index generally means that you do not have to make as much money to maintain or exceed your current lifestyle. If you are relocating to an area that costs twice as much to live, you will need to make more money in order to be satisfied with the position.

Impact on your career. If the position will have a positive or negative impact on your career then you must take that into consideration. For example, if you are applying for a position that has more prestige but a lower salary, this may be favorable if you have ambitious career goals. Taking a position that will open up more doors in the future may deliver less money now but will certainly make you more money in the future.
